Description

This memorial walk leads to various places of remembrance in Esch which were are connected with the occupation time 1940 till 1944.

Despite the promise to respect the country’s neutrality, German troops invaded the Grand-Duchy on 10th May 1940. The occupiers, under Gauleiter Gustav Simon, pursued two goals: the Germanisation of the population, as well as the destruction of the Luxembourgish state. Another goal of the Nazis was the suppression of the Jews.

Resistance movements were established to fight the nazi regime. Their actions were largely defined by patriotic propaganda and public information measures, economic boycotts and public support for political resisters and resistance fighters. The Nazis replied with strong crackdowns, as well as raids, torture, deportations, and executions.
